Well, I can’t believe I did it – wow. Ok. Let me have my Miss America/Grammy/Emmy/Etc… moment: “I would like to thank, God, Sara Landholt and her Ironmakeover blog which led me to Tanya and a super-fantastic organization, GoTRIbal”.
– It seems like just a short time ago that I stumbled across Sara’s page which had a link to the GoTRIbal site. For all of those women out there where triathlon is second nature, I want to tell it from the mountain – that GoTRIbal has been an inspiration to me – I l…

Eighteen weeks of solid training is now behind me and I have now completed my first half ironman - and boy does it feel good! My goal, and that of my girlfriend Leigh, was simply to finish and to finish within the course time limit of 7 hours. 18 weeks ago that seemed pretty daunting. While I'm strong on the bike, I'm a slow swimmer (and had never attempted a distance anywhere near 2km) and while I've run several half marathons and one full marathon, run speed is definitely not my strong suit!…

Today I got up at my usual time of 5:30 am. Got my big girl, fitness trainer pants on and my Manchester Road Race long sleeve tee. Suddenly, all the pre-race jitters hit me pretty hard. For the first time I was doing a race entirely alone.I had resigned myself to the fact that there will be times this will happen. You will have plans (as I did this time) to run with a few friends and for whatever reasons they will be unable to participate. As I moved towards the line up for those who were unseede…

Well...I did it! Yesterday I competed in my first ever run race, a 5K. My goal was to run the whole thing and I did. It was wonderful to see my mom and my daughter at the finish line. My daughter actually wrote me a note to keep with me as I ran...I (heart) 154-->my number. I kept in my left glove, a direct line to my heart. The influence I'm having on her was and is my reason to keep going. She is seeing a strong woman who is setting goals and accomplishing her dreams. What a day...

So, I am waiting for my marathon to come and go! It is scheduled for December 6th and afterwards, I am going to take 2 weeks off from running. I want to replace it with swimming! Does anyone know of someone that can teach me how to swim no matter what level I am at? Let me know and thank you in advance!

Less than a week to go with a wee bit of packing to do. Flying to an Ironman always has its challenges and sometimes I think that the packing is worse than any bad training session. I have my trusty checklist that I have used before to ensure that I have everything (and a few spares). I also find that I am somewhat distracted and the checklist helps to keep me focused on the task at hand. (Distracted I mean, looking for my car keys in my purse when they are in my hand - geez!)
I am looking forw…

I found this recently and the moment I read it, I thought of GOTRIbal (not so much because the author was using "tribal" lexicon, but because of the power and influence that the women in our global TRIbe have and share with each other FOR each other)
The topic he wrote about was the increasing absence of social interaction as our world becomes ever-more technology/virtually driven.
For every social need, want, and desire traditionally satisfied through personal interaction and social e…

So Karin's post the other day got me thinking about moms and athletes. Specifically moms who are athletes. And more specifically moms who are
professional athletes.
Then I stumbled upon a study from Penn State about the media coverage of Serena Williams' outburst during the U.S. Open (remember, she was rather forceful with her opinions with the officials?). The study said the coverage reinforced gender stereotypes, particularly when the stories contrasted Serena to eventual winner Kim Cl…

Reading Amy's recent post about NYC marathon winner Derartu Tulu got me thinking about how different it is for female and male athletes. Of course, not all women athletes have children but for those who do, a new baby brings more changes than just your typical "holy-cow-my-life-is-never-going-to-be-the-same" business.
From the moment you conceive, your body is not your own. You are then sharing it with a new life form that is completely dependent on what your body has to give it. In my own expe…

While watching the New York City marathon on Sunday I was amazed at the ease with which Derartu Tulu seemed to be running, the kick she had at the end to pull off her second major marathon win.
As I read more about her online in the hours afterward, I found I wanted to know so much more about this 37-year old mother of two from Ethiopia.
In her post race comments, she said that she struggled for much of the past three years after giving birth to her second child. She had gained nearly 40 pound…

So a few of you know that my good friend Carmen got me into triathlon as she thought it would be great cardio and cross training for the Breast Cancer 3 Day we'd be doing this November. As the months went on most of you know i've gotten just a tad bit addicted to tri's. With November being such a busy month for me with The Catalina Island Triathlon (race #7) this weekend and 2 weeks later my walk I wanted to throw this out to you ladies. So many of you have helped me over the year with my traini…

I wanted to share this story with my GoTRIbal family. This weekend, a story I wrote about a woman named Kim Truesdell who battled breast cancer not once, but twice. At 51 she started running about 15 years ago when her husband said, "Hey, let's do the 100th running of the Turkey Trot" in Buffalo, N.Y. She eventually went on to run a few marathons, including a trip to Boston.
She was on to her next challenge, triathlon, when she was diagnosed.
Two years later, she completed Ironman Wisconsin.…

Read a full report of my experience at the Ironman World Championship race this year. While the report makes it sound like I didn't like it and wouldn't go back, that is not the case. It was a very tough day and my expectations of the "World Championship" race was much different than I actually experienced. I feel truly honored to have been a part of that day and do plan to go back again some day...enjoy!
How far is that Ironman?…

Anyone else see the story of the 84-year old woman who has done the 150-mile City to Shore bike ride for 26 years?
Oh, and she rides it every year on her one-speed bike with a basket on her handlebars.
The ride raises money for the MS Society and it reminded me of the first "athletic" event I did -- a 5K walk to raise money for the local Hospice chapter. I had always been drawn to sports and enjoyed physical activity but never thought of myself as a "competitor" or even a "participant." While…

I read a story in the New York Times about "complaints" from "hard core runners" about slow people at marathons.
And frankly, it hurt just a bit.
My first marathon (and only one to date) was a 5:02 finish. And I'm proud of that 5:02 even though my goal was 4:30. Even though I know that I can do better next time. (And their will be a next time, after my 2010 year of Iron Distance preparation!)
A friend of mine just finished the Marine Corps Marathon in 6:30. She's a bit overweight. She trained…

I was an athlete handler for the CAF event today... and never before have I been more inspired, more excited, more thankful to be a part of such an amazing community such as the triathlon community.
Today I saw the most amazing display of incredible athleticism that I have ever witnessed in my life. My athlete, Dave Larsen, was a no show so I joined Brian Long (and two others) in shadowing a little boy named Jonah. Jonah is a double amputee but let me tell you - this kid is unstoppable. I came…
